Bridging Tanzania's Digital Divide: How African Child Projects Empowers Youth Through Technology

Empowering Education Through Cisco Networking Academy

In today's fast-paced technological world, digital literacy is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. African Child Projects, a Tanzanian youth-led NGO, understands this critical need and is partnering with Cisco to bridge the digital divide. Their dynamic Instructor Training Center equips educators to become Cisco Networking Academy instructors, empowering them to deliver cutting-edge courses in their own schools and community centers.

This initiative offers students a diverse range of programs, from beginner to advanced levels, covering crucial areas such as data science, networking, cybersecurity, and programming. Real-world simulations and career days help students connect their learning to future opportunities, preparing them for the demands of the modern job market.

Cohort Success Stories: Turning Clicks into Progress

African Child Projects is already witnessing impressive results. Over 600 students recently graduated from various programs, including Programming, Cybersecurity, and Data Science. This success spans across their main academy and telecenters throughout mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, even reaching rural secondary school digital clubs. Hands-on simulations brought learning to life for these young learners.

Their vibrant activities include an International Youth Day celebration themed "From Click to Progress," which featured cybersecurity hackathons and a panel discussion on digital innovation. The "Wired for Success" bootcamp provided hands-on experience with Cisco Networking devices, while simulation workshops allowed students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.

A dedicated Career Day connected students with industry experts, offering valuable insights into ICT career paths, necessary skills, and certifications. Furthermore, a Cisco Summer Camp provided focused learning in areas like Cybersecurity, AI, and Data Science, resulting in almost 50 course completions.

The commitment to training extends to the instructors themselves. Through the Cisco Networking Academy's Academy Support Center, African Child Projects instructors gained accreditation in Cyber Ops, Networking Security, and Development Network, ultimately becoming part of the Instructor Training Center to support future instructors.

“Through the African Child Projects and Cisco partnership, we are unlocking the power of digital skills—turning dreams into reality, online engagement into real-world impact, and Africa’s youth into the innovators of tomorrow. Together, we are building a future where technology becomes a bridge to equality.” – Catherine Kimambo, Executive Director, African Child Projects

Future Plans and Addressing Challenges

Looking ahead, African Child Projects has ambitious goals for 2025-2028. They aim to enhance the employability of 3,000 youth in ICT fields by equipping them with advanced digital skills and bridging the digital skills gap. This involves targeted research, skills mapping, and industry-aligned certifications. They also plan to launch technology podcasts in Kiswahili to reach a broader audience.

Expansion is also a key focus. They plan to grow to 45 academies and mentor existing ones, strengthening the Cisco Academy presence across Tanzania. An online Academy Support Center platform is also in the works to connect learners. Finally, they aim to establish 10 ICT centers across Tanzania to expand access. While facing challenges in acquiring necessary equipment like switches, routers, and computers, African Child Projects calls upon partners to support their mission through donations and collaboration.

Join the Mission: Powering an Inclusive Future

Cisco firmly believes that collaboration between industry and communities is crucial to bridge the digital divide. African Child Projects echoes this belief and invites everyone to join their mission. Whether through partnerships, donations, or spreading awareness, together we can empower the next generation of digital leaders and drive sustainable development in Tanzania.
